I'd expect it to be talking not just about the field, but about being good at it - baking at a high level.
It is possible, however, if less likely, that, as you say, it's talking simply about the field of endeavor.

I believe this will do in this context because it simply means a field/trade/competence/craft and not any particular high-level form of it. Although maybe "Базовая информатика" contributes to making baking an art :))
