"1993 yılında Yargıtayımızın 125. Yıldönümü kutlanmış ve çağrılan kimi yargıtay başkanları da bu toplantıya katılmıştır. Ancak toplantı salonunda İngilizce yargıtay kavramının karşılığı olan “Court of cassation” yerine istinaf mahkemesi anlamına gelen “Supreme court of appeal” yazılması, çağrı mektuplarında da bu terimin kullanılması tam anlamıyla bir skandal ve talihsizlik olmuştur. Nitekim toplantıya katılan Fransız Yargıtay Başkanı Drai, Türk Yargıtayının istinaf mahkemesi olup olmadığını şaşkınlıkla bize sormak gereğini duymuştur."

cassation Cassation serves the public policy function of ensuring that the lower courts apply the law consistently to the facts of the case as determined by them, and does not involve rehearing the case on its merits. Appeal, on the other hand, involves the entire case being reheard. Turkish has two terms: temyiz and istinaf and they do not mean the same thing. The latter correctly translates as 'appeal'.
