unfortunately, I had my deadlinehad already past when I saw the link, I was supposed to do this all in 2 hours, but I will keep the information handy for the next time...
Joseph Tein Sep 11, 2016:
SJLD But ... see Dr. Sue Levy's (SJLD)comment about "stumps" in this other KudoZ question ... you looked at the link below? I would trust her expert opinion (as a doctor + translator).

Margherita Russo (asker) Sep 11, 2016:
Thanks...I went for "reasonably aligned stumps", as I had the impression that discreto here meant "average" rather than "good"
Joseph Tein Sep 11, 2016:
Previous KudoZ answer You can always do a search for this in the KudoZ archives.

See: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/medical_general...

"discreto" = normal, good, satisfactory, acceptable

"affrontato" = makes me think of the two parts facing or "confronting" each other.

So they're facing each other in a satisfactory way = well aligned

Note: the answer above was given by a very knowledgeable/experienced doctor ... unfortunately she's not participating in KudoZ any longer.

sympathetically handled/ dealt with

Fractures... with stumps/ abutments(?) sympathetically handled;
Note from asker:
you guys please stop pulling my leg... :-)
I know it means that they are relatively well aligned, I was looking for a medical term..
Peer comment(s):

agree Joseph Tein : Yes, it's always good to deal sympathetically with these injuries. Especially because these people feel embarrassed and sensitive about their handicap. // Also one must have sympathy/empathy for the pain these poor people feel.
