When such lifting equipment is not available, always remember you must lift with your legs and NOT with your back. You begin the lifting process by positioning your feet slightly wider than the load you will be lifting. Next, using a squatting motion, you should be squarely in front of the load, at which time you pick the load up in as even and effective manner as possible, returning to the standing position by going straight up - reversing the squat process you used to pick the load up. Also, a point to know is that there are virtually no muscles or tendons designed in the human body dedicated to the support or protection of your back. Once you have returned to the standing position with the load, hold it as close to your body as possible throughout the entire lift. Remember also never to make quick or sharp twists with the load. Instead, always turn your entire body using both feet whenever a change in direction is required with the load. This is accomplished by positioning the foot that is in the direction you are turning in the lead turning position, followed by the foot that is opposite the direction you are turning so that it comes to rest again in the squared position that is best described as being a part just barely wider than your shoulders. This action will cause you to end up in that squared supportive position which provides the best support possible for the load.
