Spanish to English Other Philosophy
Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has any nice suggestions for how to translate this phrase ('cacofónico y gallináceo')? Here's the full sentence plus the following sentence, for a bit more context:

"Los modernos han encontrado el término cacofónico y gallináceo perfecto para ampliar la nomenclatura de la vida en sociedad: cocrear.

Mono desnudo, social y loco como soy, la incorporo pero ya, en mi hoja de ruta."

But the wordplay will work if you keep the Spanish and translate or explain it in brackets. As I say in my answer, 'cocrear' has enough cluck, crow and cock-a-doodle in it for this kind of wordplay to work.

In my opinion The wordplay doesn't work in English, so none of the suggested translations makes sense. I think you would be justified in just skipping the whole thing and putting a translator's note saying why.

Tough query The writer is drawing a comparison between the word "cocrear" and "cacarear" (cackle like a hen or crow like a rooster). It's a sneer at the "modernos". I think it'll be hard to keep the wordplay... In fact, now that I've given pondered it for a while, I think a literal translation may be the best option...

Made it up.. gets the idea of chickens/cockerels and cacophony..... might need speech marks or similar

And then I think you'd have to give the term itself in Spanish, with s translation in brackets. It has enough cock-a-doodle and crow in it for the description to make sense.
