@herbalchemist Note that my comment relates to your explanation, not your proposed answer. My only quibble with your suggested answer is that "requirement of being" is a bit awkward.

criterion of bio-sourcing / bio-sourced nature / characteristic of bio-sourcing

NB This is one criterion, not several criteria. I'd use "the criterion of bio-sourcing" for the first two occurrences. However, that doesn't fit well with the third occurrence, where I'd suggest using "the bio-sourced nature/character" or "the characteristic bio-sourcing". That's because the paint itself cannot be said to possess a "criterion"; the criterion of bio-sourcing applies to the manufacture of the paint and can apply to the choice of paint, but not to the paint itself.

agree Bashiqa : bio-sourced character a much better response.

Thanks. I think I agree with that comment for the third occurence, but not for the first two, which are about a criterion.

bio-sourced criteria

seems a reasonable response
Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : How do you bio-source a criterion, let alone several criteria?! There's only one criterion in this question, i.e. that of being bio-sourced.

criteria of organic origin

Some of the pigments used in paint are made from plant or organic origin, which provides a strong colouring to the paint, the colour depending on the type of organic pigment used.
Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : "Bio" means plant-based here, not "organic". Indeed, petro-chemicals are organic!

requirement of being a bio-based product

Pigment preparation for creating paints that meet the criteria for a bio-based product

Bio-based materials. Bio-based products must meet the Sustainable Agriculture Network’s Sustainable Agriculture Standard. Bio-based raw materials must be tested using ASTM Test Method D6866 and be legally harvested, as defined by the exporting and receiving country. Exclude hide products, such as leather and other animal skin material. Products meeting bio-based materials criteria are valued at 100% of their cost for the purposes of credit achievement calculation.

Bio-based products are products that are wholly or partly derived from biomass: material of biological origin, such as from trees, plants or animals. The biomass may have undergone some kind of physical, chemical or biological treatment before being turned into a product.
... The CEN Technical Committee ‘Bio-based products’ (CEN/TC 411) develops standards that cover horizontal aspects of bio-based products. The standards that are being developed in the framework of EC Mandate 492 are mainly focused on bio-based products other than food and feed or biomass for energy applications.

Bio-based chemicals: Greener paints improving coverage

https://www.swissbiotech.org/news/developing-bio-based-paint...
The European Union annually uses 5 million tons of solvents, while 0.63 million tons of these are ‘bio-based’. Even though the bulk of solvents used in the market belong to paint, ink and adhesive industies (about 58 percent), only 1.5 percent are allocated in the category ‘bio’. Sustainability is a highlighted issue in the paint and ink industry, however to create a more sustainable product it is essential to have a sustainable solvent. The sector requires greener processes and components for coatings, inks, adhesives, paint and varnishes. The solvents are the basic and most necessary component in processing and composition.

neutral B D Finch : Note that there is a major difference between a) "the criteria for a bio-based product" and b) "the criterion of a product being bio-based /bio-sourced". a) criteria to be met to qualify as bio-based; b) being bio-based is the criterion of acceptability.

Thanks for the note. I was focused on the implied meaning of the text but probably should not have. I am aware that peintures bio-sourcées is the goal and bio-sourcé is the criterion.
