When attached to a drug, the delivery system moves the drug towards the membrane center, thus assisting in its trans-membrane movement. Among others, this delivery system is designed for the delivery of therapeutic macromolecules: proteins or oligonucleotides, the latter being single or double-stranded DNA or RNA.
