Greek term

Ποιμαντική της φιλανθρωπίας

Greek to English Other Religion
Βλέπω ότι η ποιμαντική σαν επίθετο είναι 'pastoral', αλλά ως ουσιαστικό δεν την βρίσκω πουθενά. Καμιά ιδέα; Ευχαριστώ εκ των προτέρων.

Discussion

Nick Lingris Jul 25, 2019:
I believe the key phrase is pastoral work. You'll find it used in connection with Caritas, all over the place.
https://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&q="caritas" "pastoral ...
So pastoral work = ποιμαντική. What we have in the web example is the addition of three items:
Ποιμαντική της Φιλανθρωπίας, της Αγαθοεργίας και της Κοινωνικής Συμπαράστασης.
In the translation of the longer phrase we'll add "charity" (the English for "caritas") and the rest.
Domini Lucas Jul 25, 2019:
@Nick So Catholic there too. The question in my mind is whether my previously quoted Vatican link was written by a native English speaker.

I have also found this US link mentions the work of charity and also refers to Catholic Charities http://www.usccb.org/about/catholic-campaign-for-human-devel... (I have to admit I don't think work of charity flows well, but it is there.)

However, I did a quick search of the wider Caritas website and didn't find pastoral work of charity. The Caritas Home page quotes the Pope as saying a Church without charity does not exist and goes on to talk of a faith expressed through charity. (I'm assuming this is a reference to 1 Cor.13 where, in older translations of the Bible, charity was used for αγάπη.)

Typing pastoral charity work into the website's "Search" brings up a page entitled pastoral charity work https://www.caritas.org/?s=pastoral charity work, but I've scrolled quickly and not found the term further down. Only in the page title.

In any case, it look like there is a pattern emerging if @Anna's text is a Catholic one. If.

Nick Lingris Jul 24, 2019:
The only occurrence of the term in web pages is in connection with Caritas Hellas.
Είναι φορέας της Καθολικής Εκκλησίας στην Αθήνα για την Ποιμαντική της Φιλανθρωπίας, της Αγαθοεργίας και της Κοινωνικής Συμπαράστασης

In one of their pages I also find:
The organisation is the institution of the Catholic Church in Greece for the Pastoral work of Charity, Benevolence and Social Support. (Carital Annual UK 2017)
Domini Lucas Jul 24, 2019:
@Nick Trouble is that it may be necessary to include ministry, but without further context it is hard to know. In terms of flow pastoral charity work is ok in English, but it isn't one used in Anglican circles. I have found this Vatican link that talks of "pastoral charity" but it appears in quotation marks some of time. And is a specifically Catholic link. Only had a quick skim of the document so far but posting it in case useful to @Anna.

Does really depend on the wider context though.

pastoral ministry of charity

Or perhaps "pastoral work of charity".
Peer comment(s):

neutral Domini Lucas : I suspect pastoral charity work would be more likely, or sth like charity work of a pastoral nature, depending on wider context. But I’m not sure either fits the Greek from the few words given so far.
