Pour moi, il s'agit effectivement de "diverting attention from the main focus": distraire le répondant du sujet principal (context of the category) pour mieux y revenir. Si je me souviens bien (mais je vous laisse explorer/vérifier), ça tient de la digression, qui permet d'obtenir de nouvelles réponses à des questions qui se ressemblent ou à une suite de questions sur un même sujet.

I don't think this means blind in the sense that you suggest. I think it means they don't want a long conversation in the context of category (not quite a blind alley, becaue the information gained is wanted, but secondary to the main interest of the interview). It could also mean diverting attention from the main focus, making it seem like a general question about social media, but that seems less likely.

The sense here is that of a 'blind medical test' (à l'aveugle ?), where the people don't know if they are receiving an active product or a placebo.
It's a little difficult to see how this could be applied to social media, since each is so specific in its terminology and way of functioning; but I suppose the essence is that they want to talk about people's social media behaviour in general, without the respondents knowing what company they are representing?
