Granted, it seems less formal than 'rehabilitation', but I know I've seen or heard it with the meaning we're looking for. With 'rehabilitation', I am not sure how widely used it is.

I've never seen the word used this way, but I think it has to be the meaning. To rehabilitate something means to restore it to its original condition.

If evidence of a witness's credibility is introduced prior to his or her credibility being attacked, this is typically considered bolstering and is not permitted.

Lowest CL as I - with a vague ENG tort law recollection of remedies for defamation - am guessing that this is North Germany and not thge Southern German-speaking area where Rehab might not have the smae or any legal meaning.
Example sentence:
