The group that a children is part of at kindergarten or in the afternoons at all-day school, would this plain and simply be a "reference group"? Or is there a different word used (in the UK)?

Example: Es werden täglich 300 Kinder in 14 Bezugsgruppen von 13.00 bis 18.00 Uhr betreut.

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

groups and core groups – thank you! As mentioned below, core groups fit the bill for me for kindergartens, and groups better for the afternoons at the all-day schools ... bubbles, though not what i'm looking for, is good to know, same with social cohorts :) I'm not sure i got the grading right (first time eva' to ask a question on proz!) - i wanted to split it between groups and core groups, but that's not possible, right? thank you, all, you've been a great help!

Gruppen vs. offenes Konzept Das geht hier darum, dass Kita und Hort noch tatsächlichen Gruppen mit festen Bezugspersonen haben anstelle eines offenen Konzeptes, wo sich Kinder und Erzieher quasi in der gesamten Einrichtung mehr oder weniger frei bewegen können... Es gibt dazwischen auch in der Kita teiloffen, wenn z.B. die Kinder morgens für ein paar Stunden lustig mischen können aber vorher ist Gruppenkreis und danach Mittagessen in der Gruppe... Die Abgrenzung ist also Gruppe oder nicht, somit sollte Gruppe ausreichen... Sofern es tatsächlich nach Alter gruppiert sein sollte, könnte man noch ein "peer" hinzufügen, aber normalerweise sind die Gruppen bewusst altersgemischt, damit die Kleinen die Großen als Vorbild haben und die Großen den Kleinen helfen sollen und Rücksichtnahme üben lernen...

The point about "Bezugsgruppen" ... ... is that each group has one or more specific "Bezugsperson(en)", so it's more than just "group" IMO. No idea how to phrase it, but I'd say "core group" is half way there.

I would simply use "group". "reference group" doesn't sound right. I wonder about "home group" or "affinity group", but I think "group" would be your best bet.

The simple "group" works well in this example, thank you! The word Bezugsgruppe comes up often in the document and I think in the all-day schooling context "group" is best. For the day-care/nursery/kindergarten kids with their set groups, a little less clear, though – "core group" works better there for me ...

core group

The schools I attended a long time ago had nothing but core groups until year 9. Except for "religion", you had the same kids in all classes year after year.

Mit reinen Kommentaren ist es nicht getan. Aber falls Dir zu "Bezugsgruppe" eine brauchbare Lösung einfällt, bin ich gerne bereit, meinen Beitrag noch mal zu überdenken. Bisher sehe ich allerdings noch keine überzeugenden Alternativen/Peer group. Na also!

Certainly not. But I don't know if it's possible to find a UK-centric term. At the other end at least, "Bezugsgruppe" seems neither limited to contexts like ours nor limited by geography: Germans, Austrians and Swiss all seem to use it.

In sociology, it might also be called a reference-group.

BTW, cohort doesn't always refer to an age-specific group moving through the ranks. Read the example sentence*carefully*.

Jedes Kind ist einer Bezugsgruppe zugeordnet. Je nach den Bedürfnissen der Kinder befinden sich die jeweiligen Bezugsgruppen in ihren eigenen Gruppenräumen.
Schwerpunkte in der Arbeit in der Bezugsgruppe sind die Beziehungsgestaltung zur Gruppenleitung, einen Platz in der Gruppe zu finden – räumlich wie auch sozial – und ein Zugehörigkeitsgefühl zu entwickeln. Zeiten in der eigenen kleinen Gruppe geben Möglichkeit zur Ruhe zu kommen und intensivere Zuwendung durch die Bezugsperson zu erfahren. Die kleine Gruppe bietet Sicherheit und Orientierung für das Kind. Außerdem ist die Gruppenleitung der Bezugsgruppe auch Ansprechpartner für die Eltern.
