As a reference, for onshore pipelines the minimum cover of depth should follow the specifications given in ISO 13623; Sec.6.8.2, however, as detailed previously, due consideration needs to be taken of the influence a crater release has on dis-persion.

2. Crater formation by the rupture of a buried pipeline
A crater is produced instantaneously after an explosive event takes place. The explosion causes the fracture, compaction and plastic deformation of the soil close to the pipe. The result is the formation of a bowl-shaped cavity by the displacement and ejection of material from below the ground surface.

"Drilling underground for oil and natural gas can lead to explosions and subsidence craters. Machinery can sometimes encounter a pocket of natural gas that is under extremely high pressure. When drilling machinery punctures the pocket of natural gas, the overlying rock layers may not be able to contain it. Like an enormous balloon, the gas pocket pops. As the gas is released in the explosion, a crater forms in the empty space.

Crater size and geometry will be a function of pipeline depth of cover.
