French term

Sabre d'extrémité

French to English Tech/Engineering Manufacturing conveyor belt specifications
Hello all,
I'm afraid I don't have much context. I'm translating tech sheets for conveyor belts. The transmission parts include: axe de commande, sabre d'extrémité, rouleaux d'embarrage and rouleaux de renvoi.
I'm afraid that's all I've got.
Any conveyor belt experts out there?

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Dec 31, 2021:
@ CadastreToulous Yes, this construction is well known, it's only the question whether Kimberley's context refer to this construction or any other item with sharp blades at the end of the belt, called "sabre d'extrémité". Unfortunately Kimberley did not answer our questions and did not inform us about his "solution" (perhaps the translation has already been delivered).

If I encounter incomprehensible expressions in source texts that I cannot clearly determine from my own expertise, from reference books or by internet search, I always ask the customer first and request illustrations and/or explanations. In most cases, this is sufficient to find the correct translation.
Bourth Dec 30, 2021:
@ Johannes Various sources say it is given this name because it resembles a sabre. As a sabreur myself (but mostly an épéeiste, and formerly a fleurettiste), I can tell you that is nonsense. However, it is thinner than the end of a standard conveyor belt unit, because the roller is smaller, and thus the horizontal distance between two abutting belt top surfaces is smaller, making it good for small products (the size of biscuits or chocolates for ex.), i.e. the distance between the belts is end-roller* radius 1 + end-roller* radius 2 + the small gap between the two belts, so the smaller the radii, the smaller the hollow "V" between the horizontal surfaces of the belts.
* Of course the roller can be replaced by a rounded fixed end, but with greater friction and thus belt wear.
Althea Draper Dec 28, 2021:
@Johannes You get a 'sabre fixe' and a 'sabre tournant'. The rotating ones have reduced friction and therefore cause less wear to the belts. Examples of a 'sabre fixe' and 'sabre tournant' are shown in the links below, and you can see where they are located in relation to the belt.

Johannes Gleim Dec 28, 2021:
@ Kimberley Can you please inform us about the kind of products conveyed by the conveyor? Is it from the type shown in Althea's references?
I really wonder about your link between the conveyor belt and the 'sabre' as the part called 'sabre' is a roller (probably outside the belt) acc. Althea's references.
Do you have any illustration or description?
What function has the sabre in your context?
Althea Draper Dec 27, 2021:
Nose bar A type of non-rotating end roll, usually UHMW, used for minimum diameter transfer where shaft deflection would be a problem.

Althea Draper Dec 27, 2021:

I'm NOT a specialist at all, but here's a reference:

You could ask Thomas what he concluded.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion on this term. I had very little context to go by, it was for a rush job, and I kind of forgot about it afterward. Based on some limited references the client was able to provide, I deduced that boxed products were moved along the conveyors."

nose bar

'Medium' confidence because in the matter I know only what the Internet tells me.

Comme elle est capable de fonctionner sur un SABRE de 19 mm, même les produits les plus délicats sont transférés en toute sécurité.
Since it is capable of running on a three-quarter inch NOSEBAR, even the most delicate product transfers safely.

A nosebar is a SMALL DIAMETER PULLEY installed under the belt at the end of a conveyor. The smaller diameter reduces the gap at the end of the conveyor that is typical of larger diameter pulleys and allows small parts to transfer from the conveyor with more stability.

"When transferring the product between operations, the belts' ability to flex over a ROLLING NOSE BAR or a KNIFE EDGE TRANSFER is a critical factor in the selection of the proper belt for the application."

"The fabric belt conveyor is friction-driven and usually has a NARROW NOSE BAR (KNIFE EDGE). This makes it possible to transport small and delicate products without squashing them."
https://www.marvu.nl/en/conveyor-belts/fabric-conveyor-belts...

You'll also find 'TRANSFER NOSE' (for transferring items to the next conveyor belt).

"After cutting, due to the need to transfer small thin product along the flow, the problem is increased by the use of KNIFE EDGE STATIC NOSE BARS."

The 'sabre' is a scraper, probably an end scraper.

The preferred forms of the two interior scrapers near the receiving end of the conveyor utilized hard steel, blunt edge scraper blades as described for the exterior discharge end scraper but are otherwise of different design and perform different functions relative to the discharge end scraper.

The most typical scraper was an end scraper, which had a convex or nearly straight working edge on its narrow end.

If it is not a matter of a scraper or stripper, a tail end roller or fixed rod would also be an option.
