béton sec

I have done a lot of work for an institute representing manufacturers of precast concrete products and conducting research into their production. They use the term 'béton sec' for a concrete mix with low water content, as is desirable for fast production of precast units. In context it is clear that it is 'wet concrete', not concrete that has dried and hardened.

Moreover, 'earth-moist' is a variant on other terms used for the same thing and revolving around use of the word 'slump' (tassement): 'no/low/zero slump concrete'.

In my 40 years working with concrete, I cqn't say I recall encountering 'earth-moist' until today. It appears, however, that it goes back to at least 1978 when the Canadian Thesarus of Construction Technology and Science advised against the literal translation and recommended 'béton sec'.

Thinking more about it, while in the industry they say 'béton sec', the fuller term is 'béton sec à démoulage immédiat'.

It's 'consistance' is S1 (slump 1), the grading corresponding to no-slump and therefore earth-moist concrete.
