Spanish term or phrase: Trabajo Fin de Grado

SPAIN. The exact term is "Trabajo Fin de Grado (TFG)". I know what it refers to, but am not sure what it is currently called in English, and it may be different between US vs UK. Also, I'd like to know if we use an abbreviation similar to the Spanish TFG.

Though these options may not be widely used, they recreate or reproduce the transparency of source text's meaning, as opposed to a term such as "capstone." As for "dissertation," these are at the graduate level, so this may not be the best option in this context, which probably involves an undergraduate degree.

I didn't want to get into the difference/s between dissertation vs. thesis, as it varies between locations and universities. Thanks to everyone for contributing on this query, it's all been really helpful.

dissertation vs. thesis

In the U.S., dissertations are for doctoral degrees, primarily PhDs; whereas, theses are used for master's degrees. In the UK, it's the other way around, generally speaking. For my PhD at an Australian university, I did a thesis, consistent with UK usage. As for capstone, I know of no master's degree that requires one in the U.S., where these are generally reserved for certain bachelor's degrees and only at certain universities and certain programs. It's definitely not the norm. And not all master's in the U.S. require a thesis; indeed, mine in TESOL required a portfolio.

I had to do a final year project and a dissertation, although it was a laboratory project. As for the difference between dissertation and thesis, I have always understood a thesis to be the end result of a PhD which should contain some original research and has to be defended before experts. I believe a dissertation is an extended essay.

Bit late here. I think it depends greatly in the subject area. My son completed his degree in History of Art at Edinburgh three years ago and had to do a dissertation. Final Year Project seems to be for more technical degrees. Interestingly, the School of Informatics seems to use both.

I'm actually using "Final Degree Project" without the abbreviation. The answers posted so far are interesting, and give rise to other questions, such as the difference between a dissertation and thesis. Darius' note about "capstone" is useful, as it applies to both undergraduate and graduate studies. So, many thanks to everyone contributing so far.

Something strange happened to this question! Anyway, as I said before, it is possible to use Final Year Project, and it is even sometimes abbreviated to FYP, but I wouldn't immediately understand it from the abbreviation.

In this context, I'd imagine a distinction would typically be made between graduate and undergraduate degrees, with "fin de grado" referring to the end of one's undergraduate studies. // estudios de grado = undergraduate studies

Asker: In Scotland, I took an "ordinary degree" (BA) and didn't have to do a dissertation or thesis. However, my partner did an honours degree at the same university and had to submit a thesis. Translating these things can be a minefield.
