Discussion

neilmac (asker) Jun 7, 2022:
Research results: The "Commodity Classification for Transportation Statistics" lists this as "fluxing limestone", so I'll probably go with that. Thanks again to everyone for the comments, links and help. I really appreciate it.

Peter Guest Jun 6, 2022:
Phil Doesn't look like it from the question, which says carbon vegetal which is charcoal a fuel very similar to coke in that it is reduced to mere carbon from wood rather than coal
philgoddard Jun 6, 2022:
Peter In that case, could "fundente" be translated as "coke"?
Peter Guest Jun 6, 2022:
iron smelting is usually done by putting layers of iron ore, limestone and coke in the furnace. I never heard it called flux when I worked in the plants in the summer holidays. Here's a good description: https://www.brighthubengineering.com/manufacturing-technolog...
philgoddard Jun 6, 2022:
Isn't this just wrongly punctuated? When you Google the term, it's always "piedra, fundente". Isn't it "stone, [whatever fundente is], lime"?

I don't see the relevance of the sentence beginning "Alternativamente", but I assume it's something else you've found, rather than the text you're translating. If so, I think it may be a distraction.

Sergio Kot Jun 6, 2022:
@neilmac TXS! My question rose from the thought that you may have missed my suggestion...
neilmac (asker) Jun 6, 2022:
@Sergio Yes, I'm probably going to use your suggestion: "flux lime/stone"... :-)
Sergio Kot Jun 6, 2022:
@neilmac What about "flux"...?
neilmac (asker) Jun 6, 2022:
NB: In a previous string, "caliza" was translated as "limestone". I've tried putting "Piedra fundente o cales" into Google translate and it comes up as "Flint or limestone"... which is probably wrong (AFAIK, flint = silex) but I'm still puzzled.
