Please see the references and the discussion box.

Recurrence of plantar foot ulcers is a common and major problem in diabetes but not well understood. Foot biomechanics and patient behavior may be important. The aim was to identify risk factors for ulcer recurrence and to establish targets for ulcer prevention.

To prevent plantar foot ulcer recurrence, international guidelines recommend the use of therapeutic footwear with a demonstrated plantar pressure-relieving effect.3 An innovative adjunctive offloading strategy could provide patients with real-time feedback on at-risk plantar pressures during everyday activities, allowing for an immediate response in activity behaviour and offloading, and thereby acting as an early warning system for increased ulcer risk.

Neuropathic foot ulcers form as a result of a loss of peripheral sensation and are typically seen in individuals with diabetes. Local paresthesias, or lack of sensation, over pressure points on the foot leads to extended microtrauma, breakdown of overlying tissue, and eventual ulceration.

A diabetic foot ulcer is an open wound or sore on the skin that's slow to heal. These are common in people with diabetic polyneuropathy.

Healing time for neuropathic planter foot ulcers (NPFUs) in persons with diabetes may be reduced through use of non-removable fiberglass total contact casting (F-TCC) compared with removable cast walkers (RCWs), although the evidence base is still growing.
