drop the hammer; put the hammer down:
"trucker c.b. slang, meaning to drive off quickly, or drive at high speed for long periods. The term originates from the idea of pushing the throttle to the floor, and placing a heavy hammer on it to hold it down, which was done, years ago, before cruise control was added to trucks." Word Detective, http://mpt.ninja/KB8f.
Alguma outra tradução que não seja literal? (Encontrei "martelar o acelerador".)

"Pé na tábua" equivale a "step on the gas". Já tenho esta no dicionário. :-) |
Obrigado, mas de qualquer forma não serve porque não é uma locução verbal. |

último prego no caixão
sugestão.
referência também do Word Dectetive:
"It is possible that “bring the hammer down” refers to this process as well, especially as it carries a sense of “put an end to something with conclusive action.” But the fact that “bring the hammer down” invariably invokes severe, unpleasant action tends to indicate that it originally referred to the “ruthless suppression” sense of “hammer,” a crushing action that has been delayed for a time for some reason, but that is finally decisively exercised. The hammer that is being “brought down,” in this saying, has been poised over the victim’s head for quite a while."

Obrigado a todos!
PS: A tradução tem que ser uma locução verbal. Locução nominal não serve!
A referência do texto em inglês que colei veio do link do seu enunciado: Word Detective, http://mpt.ninja/KB8f.
A locução proposta, agora completa: "Colocar o último prego no caixão".
que acredito ser uma expressão bastante conhecida.
exemplo: "Ford coloca o último prego no caixão do EcoSport" link: https://www.automaistv.com.br/ford-coloca-ultimo-prego-caixa...
o uso para o "colocar o último prego no caixão" que pensei é o de encerrar de vez um assunto/situação que estaria demorando muito para ser definitivamente encerrado.
