Campos

Spanish to English Other Food & Drink Fruit Growth
Is fruit that is going to be processed into fruit juice, concentrates, purees or frozen
such as STRAWBERRIES/ BLUEBERRIES/ RASPBERRIES/ BLACKBERRIES/ AVOCADOS/ POMEGRANATES
grown in fields, on farms or in gardens. Is there a terminology that is used for the production of
these kinds of fruit that will later be harvested and processed?

Thanks for any help.

Discussion

Carol Gullidge Feb 15, 2023:
re plantations We don't really have plantations (e.g., for rice, sugar cane or bananas, etc) in the UK, but fields (for crops such as strawberries, raspberries, etc. Having said that, if we did grow avocados or pomegranates here, then these would presumably be in orchards? "Farms" or "fruit farms" would of course cover all of these.
O G V Feb 15, 2023:
Domini Lucas Feb 15, 2023:
@Eileen If going specific, I think Carol is right and fruit farms is most likely safest if you can't be sure whether fields are specifically meant.
Domini Lucas Feb 15, 2023:
re plantation Plantation sounds more US or colonial to me than UK, and could have unhelpful connotations https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantation
Jennifer Levey Feb 15, 2023:
@Asker and @All A 'plantation' is almost by definition dedicated to the cultivation of a single crop (any kind of fruit, nuts, timbers, by-products, etc.) for harvesting and commercialization. It may occupy only a part of a 'farm' or 'field' - and a 'farm' or 'field' can have several plantations, each dedicated to a different product.

In contrast, a single 'farm' may produce half a dozen kinds of fruit, vegetables, cereals, etc. - not to mention livestock - and many farms produce no fruit at all.

Likewise, a 'field' is absolutely non-specific as regards the produce it generates.
Eileen Brophy (asker) Feb 15, 2023:
Plantation As mentioned by Jennifer Levey, would anyone consider a "plantation" regarding an area where fruit is grown? It wouldn't be as specific as "field" or "farm" and could include all kinds of fruit couldn't it?
Eileen Brophy (asker) Feb 15, 2023:
@Domini Lucas I don't want to leave it vague at all, the terminology I am seeking is for the UK, as the text is to be published for UK consumers and companies.
Domini Lucas Feb 15, 2023:
field/farm - extra links for info This link seems to use both field and farm, though describing the fields as being on the farm. https://thedevonblueberrycompany.co.uk/ And lots of different farms mentioned here https://www.angusgrowers.co.uk/growers/, including this "soft fruit farm" https://www.angusgrowers.co.uk/farm/l-m-porter/ (some of the others are mixed farms). However, there could be differences depending on the fruit, though farms/farming does come up for the fruits you've mentioned so far, even for pomegranates which I assumed might be in groves. However this link https://bluecrop.com/faq talks of land, then fields, but also that some blueberries are picked in forests depending on where they are grown. I agree that neither farm nor field seem quite right as a standalone title, hence wondering re a more generic word like 'site'.
Domini Lucas Feb 15, 2023:
site? Found an option using "site". http://smallfruits.smadc.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Bram... Wondering if it might help you to use sth like site/growing sites if you want to leave it vague. Is it UK or US? Or elsewhere. Though site would be ok across the board.
I would go for 'fields' instead of 'farms', because 'farms' are not always fields, as we can see here:

Carol Gullidge Feb 15, 2023:
@ Eileen I think Fruit Farms or similar would be fairly safe
Eileen Brophy (asker) Feb 15, 2023:
@O G V It's not a phrase or a paragraph, it's a heading in Spanish in a text but I wasn't sure how I should translate "Campos" into English regarding the growth of different kinds of fruit that will later be converted into fruit juice, concentrates, etc., as I explained above
O G V Feb 15, 2023:
¿de español a inglés o viceversa? 1. Frase o párrafo original para contextualizar.
2. fields, on farms or in gardens. ¿está en español? campos, granjas, jardines...
3. ¿Se trata de encontrar un término genérico válido? ¿Qué problema hay en campos/ fields?
Carol Gullidge Feb 15, 2023:
Farms etc We have plenty of strawberry farms around here, many of which display “Pick Your Own” signs during the picking season. Meanwhile, apples are of course grown in orchards

FARMS AND FIELDS

Given the fact teat you have explained that thjs is a generalised heading, rather than a term used in a specific sentence, and given a little more time for reflection, I see that the text refers to soft berries as well as fruit grown on trees (pomegranates and avocados), I would suggest FARMS & FIELDS. Unless you prefer FARMS, FIELDS, AND ORCHARDS. Personally I see it more important to get the idea across to the reader than restricting yourself to a one word translation Besides, FARMS, FIELDS, AND ORCHARDS sounds good. Says I!!
Peer comment(s):

agree Carol Gullidge : agree with the logic of course, but surely fields and orchards are just part of a farm? Which I think makes them a bit redundant!

3. Farms have fields and/or orchards with trees.
4. Maybe letting us see the original sentence and its full context would be a good idea!
Note from asker:
I already stated about Rick, that there is no original sentence, there is only a heading "Campos" referring to a text about growing different kinds of fruit.

neutral O G V : great arguments, but answer already provided//Fine, thanks. Anyway is better to change it into a reference for politeness.

Spanish term (edited): campo

plantation

The only single term that comes to mind, and would cover all the kinds of fruit mentioned in the question (some of which have specific terms, eg strawberries are grown in 'beds' laid out in 'fields') regardless of the scale of the operation, would be 'plantation'.

--------------------------------------------------

Although they are not referred to in the question, 'plantation' is commonly used when referring to places where bananas, coffee, coca leaf and other food-crops are cultivated - not to mention rubber, cotton and other industrial-scale farming operations.

Farms

Also an option. An online search for "Strawberry farm" gets About 1,700,000 hits.

I do like the Beatles song, but I think Farms is a better generic heading for things like strawberries and blueberries... etc..

@Eileen, yes, I have. Farming takes place on a farm. And, for example, an online search for "Blueberry farming" gets plenty of hits ("Soil management for Blueberry farming in USA"...

QED.
Example sentence:

Enjoy Mallorcas most delicious strawberries for self-picking or take-away from our strawberry farm

Enjoy an experience on a strawberry farm ... with local guides and try your hand at strawberry picking

Note from asker:
It's fine for strawberries but I've never heard of BLUEBERRY/ RASPBERRY/ BLACKBERRY/ AVOCADO or POMEGRANATE farms, have you?

agree Carol Gullidge : "fruit farms" covers a multitude of sins :)
