This is from a Libyan text. After looking it up, it says it was a 'dark' night. Can it also mean it was a difficult/hard night?

وَرُبَّمَا عَبَّرُوا عَنِ الشِّدَّةِ بِالْيَوْمِ، يُقَالُ: يَوْمٌ (أَيْوَمُ) كَمَا يُقَالُ: لَيْلَةٌ لَيْلَاءُ.
