The operating characteristics of the plasma/cathode sputter deposition reactors
discussed in section 17.4 are similar because in industrial service they use
argon as the working gas, and operate at pressures between 0.13 and 1.3 Pa
(1 and 10 mTorr). Argon is used because it is the cheapest chemically inert
gas available to industry. The pressure range is limited by the requirement
of long enough mean free paths for sputtered atoms to travel with minimal
collisions from the cathode-target to the workpiece. These reactors use a wide
range of metals as cathode-targets to deposit a sputtered coating with the desired
characteristics.
