English term
one of the magnitude of errors
English to Portuguese

Economics
Of course, few doubt that structural conditions make some difference to pricing and other market outcomes, and few advocates would go so far as to make the presumption completely irrefutable. Much of the debate has therefore centered on the question of how accurately structural characteristics of a market predict competitive outcomes, and hence how much reliance should be placed on concentration and share data. Put differently, this issue is *one of the magnitude of errors* made by relying on concentration and shares, and more specifically, on the errors made by different thresholds for those data.

(essa é) uma questão da magnitude dos erros
Análise do trecho:
“this issue is one of the magnitude of errors… “ equivale a “this issue is an issue of the magnitude of errors”.

Não é esse o sentido expresso por “magnitude” (i.e. the great size or extent of sth., Oxford). Você usou uma nuance de significado que não está no original. https://www.aulete.com.br/pletora

Discussion
Indeed, due to the quality of the source material, there is only so much we can do without knowing what exactly the author was trying to say. At this point, if it is not possible to check it with the author, my suggestion is still to translate that particular part of the text, using terms that are very close in meaning to the original, even if the translated text for that passage ends up sounding vague and convoluted like the source material. Translators can only provide high-quality translations if the original text can convey its message clearly, or if there is a way to clear any doubts and confusions with the author. Otherwise, we run the risk of shifting away from translation and going too much into content writing territory.
I was looking at some related words (sharing the same Latin root) and it seems they all refer to degree/scale/intensity rather than quantity or number. Compare:
magnitude (from L. magnus “great” -> L. magnitudo -> M.E. magnitude “greatness of character”) (Oxford Lang. Dict.)
magnanimous: very kind and generous
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/magna...
magnificent: impressively beautiful, elaborate or extravagant; very good, excellent. (from L magnus “great” -> L. magnificent “making great” (Oxford Lang. Dict.)
Magna Carta/Charta: The Great Charter; The Constitution (of a country) https://www.almaany.com/en/dict/en-en/magna/
magna cum laude: with high honor https://www.almaany.com/en/dict/en-en/magna/
Related structure: this issue is one that… (= one issue) https://google.com/search?q="this issue is one that"
this issue is one of the magnitude of errors (= this issue is [an issue of] the magnitude of errors, meaning the size/scope/dimension of errors. As phrased, almost definitely it’s not “the great number”. There is no such definition for “magnitude” in ANY of the dictionaries that I consulted (namely Oxford, Cambridge, Collins, Macmillan, Dictionary.com). If this is the intended meaning, then “magnitude” is the wrong word.
The SIZE of the error(s), or
The GREAT NUMBER of errors.
The writer "puts it differently" but it doesnt clarify the meaning at all (for me anyway)
OR could ONE be the subject?
"A magnitude of errors"
Unfortunately, the more I read it, the more confused I become!
Considering that “magnitude” might be a misnomer, I strongly encourage the Asker to ask the client for clarification, just to be on the safe side. I would not infer that “many” is the real meaning intended unless the author says so.
IMO it would read better as.
"one of the large number of errors" which Teresa has chosen to interpret it as.
There is a magnitude of popular Java EE standards that are widely used. (https://www.eclipse.org/community/eclipse_newsletter/2019/fe...
Evidentemente, não é o caso de “magnitude” em inglês (veja definições anteriores). Este substantivo NÃO tem o sentido de “grande quantidade” ou “grande número”, a menos que você possa provar o contrário.
Segundo o Merriam-Wester, “magnitude” também significa “número” ou “quantidade”. Note que, neste exemplo, o substantivo “magnitude” pode ser pluralizado: “the savings in amounts of metal … will be of dramatically significant magnitudes”. Evidentemente, não é a mesma estrutura de “abundance of tools”. E nem pode ser porque “magnitude” não tem o mesmo sentido!
"There is an abundance of tools at your disposal." (Mais exemplos: https://www.thefreedictionary.com/Abundance)
O mesmo pode ser feito com "magnitude" e outros substantivos.
Ademais, existe o que é prescrito ou descrito gramaticalmente, e existe o desempenho linguístico da pessoa que produziu o texto original. Como tradutores, sabemos que o original nem sempre está perfeito. Por isso a discussão e possíveis interpretações.
Do ponto de vista semântico, “magnitude” é definido como:
1) the great size or extent of something; great importance.
2) size; the numerical quantity or value.
3) the degree of brightness of a star. (Oxford Language Dictionary)
Do ponto de vista lexical:
“Magnitude” é um substantivo SINGULAR, portanto não pode significar “muitos”. Singular e plural são categorias bem diferentes!
Podemos dizer: “one of many”, “one of several”, “one of a hundred/thousand/etc.” mas não “one one a magnitude” (sic).
Insisto que no atual contexto, “one” é um pronome (relacionado ao substantivo “issue”) e não um numeral, como a maioria está inferindo incorretamente!
O interessante do ProZ é que, mesmo diante de argumentos irrefutáveis, há colegas que continuam insistindo na interpretação equivocada.
I’m done with this discussion. Of course, the Asker has the prerogative to ignore all the arguments I have presented and pick the wrong translation.
"...one of the many errors..." - Fica claro que vários erros são cometidos, e esse é um deles.
"...one of the serious errors..." - Fica claro que o foco é na seriedade do erro.
Sugeriria ao colega que perguntasse sobre esse trecho ao cliente para esclarecer.
The issue is one of a loss of moral compass. A questão é a perda da bússola moral. https://translate.google.com/?sl=en&tl=pt&text=The issue is ...
É evidente que no exemplo acima, não estamos falando de uma das perdas da bússola moral e sim da perda da bússola moral.
Analogicamente:
The issue is one of the magnitude of errors. A questão é a magnitude/relevância/importância/grandeza dos erros. Outra possibilidade: “A questão é a quantidade [numérica] de erros”. (Oxford)
Se fosse “um dos muitos/inúmeros erros”, o texto diria: “The issue is one of the many errors”, “… one of the countless errors” etc.
PS: I wanted to provide individual feedback as a neutral, but I couldn’t because of limited space.
A pergunta deveria/poderia ter incluído "made by relying".
Um dos muitos erros, um dos inúmeros erros cometidos quando se confia, quando nos baseamos...
