Battitura dei fili

Italian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Wall painting / Fresco
Description about how frescos were made in 1500.
The italian passage talks about: sulla malta ruvida (arriccio) si trasponevano linee di riferimento come le cornici con l'aiuto della battitura dei fili.
I have found "snapped lines", but not entirely sure this is the correct translation.
Method of applying a straight lines of a drawing onto plaster, by stretching a piece of string soaked in pigment (or without, when the line is impressed into fresh plaster), pulling back and releasing it so that it snaps against the painting, leaving a mark (Resta di Stucco Project).

snapping taut pieces of string onto the surface of the fresco

This technique is still employed in the construction sector, using chalk lines.

I don't think it can be expressed as concisely in English as it is in Italian. 'Snapped lines' doesn't convey a clear meaning.

In your case, I don't think they'd need to use pigment because the string would make a mark in the wet plaster.

In addition, before the design can be drawn and the pigments applied to the final layer of plaster, a whole series of preparatory operations must be carried out: snapping the cords (establishing a centre line or a grid by means of a taut cord dipped in paint and snapped against the surface), applying the rough plaster undercoat

Mr. Strinati, for his part, believes that many details in the newfound Cavallini fresco are eerily echoed in the ''St. Francis Legend.'' Walking over to the chapel's left wall, he points to remnants of battitura dei fili, a technique in which stretched-out thread covered in reddish paint was snapped on the wall to help create straight lines in the fresco's background architecture. ''That technique was once thought to have originated at Assisi,'' he explains. ''But here it is, in a medieval Roman church.''

Cords soaked in red ink were stretched out between two pieces of wood and then snapped against the wall to create perfectly straight lines.

neutral philgoddard : Like 'snapped lines', I don't think this will be easily understood.//Because it needs to be explained, as it is in all of your examples.

Snapping a line/cord

Part of the preparatory work to ensure a straight line on a finished work, be it woodwork, construction or wall painting including frescoes. It is an ancient technique that has even found its way into the vocabulary of digital art (Adobe Fresco is an app with a snapline function).
Example sentence:

.... snapping a lines, masons and artists. ... Ancient Egyptians used red and yellow ochres and black inks for their lines.

Roman wall paintings ... display depressions in coloured plaster backgrounds left by...imprints made by snapping a cord against the rendering

snapped cord technique
In the technique of mural painting, the expression indicates a particular method for marking, on the surface which is to be painted, horizontal and vertical lines of reference for the composition or the grid for the transportation of the drawing. The procedure foresees that, on the surface, a string is held tightly (between pre-defined points) usually covered with charcoal powder or brown earth: taking advantage of the tension of the string, it is lifted into the centre and then let go to fall, so that on the wall, a straight line is imprinted.
