intellectual discussion
I think "discussion" rather than "dispute" works best here.

multilayered intellectual analysis of
The rest of the sentence is tough too. How shall we express islamisch geprägten Kulturkreis? The group of civilizations/cultural area shaped by Islam?
The idea of Auseinandersetzung here is not dispute (it can be) but a kind turning something over in one's mind.
I think in concrete terms (you don't give the context) it means many (Western?) minds over the centuries taking up and considering elements of Islamic culture, and this would include literature as well as university. 'Discourse', suggested elsewhere, seems to limit it to 'what kinds of intellectual expression did academic discussion of Islam take?'
Here is what Collins dictionary has:
Auseinandersetzung [a] (= Diskussion) discussion, debate (über +acc about, on); (= Streit) argument; (= feindlicher Zusammenstoß) clash (wegen over);
[b] (= das Befassen) examination (mit of);
(kritisch) analysis (mit of)
I think this is b, examination or analysis.

The multilayered is not so good - complex? Even analysis is not 100%
