Quote by Camus

German to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Philosophy
'Der Mensch ist nichts an sich. Er ist nur eine grenzenlose Chance. Aber er ist der grenzenlos Verantwortliche für diese Chance.'

I am looking for an 'official' or confirmed English translation of this quote by Albert Camus. I have sifted through various quotations websites without finding it. Any philosophers out there who could help me out on this one?

No, sadly not. But Camus was widely translated into German, so as a source text, I think it's reliable enough.
writeaway Jan 20, 2005:
do you have the original French-would make things a lot easier I think.

official (?) translation below

"Man is nothing in himself. He is merely infinite opportunity. But he is responsible for his opportunity."
Found this at the ref below. I imagine the writer took it from a published translation, though I haven't found one on Google
Can't say I like it much. How about:
"Man, in himself, is nothing but infinite possibility. But he is infinitely responsible etc."?

French version

Sorry, I've not been able to find the English - but I think this is the French original. I hope this is of some help - if you don't already have it, that is!

L'homme n'est rien en lui-même. Il n'est qu'une chance infinie,
mais il est le responsable infini de cette chance.

"Man is nothing in himself. ...

I do not know whether this is the official translation, but I found the following (partial) translation on the internet:

"Man is nothing in himself. But he is infinitely responsible for that chance..."

Man is nothing in himself. He is merely a boundless opportunity ...

Man is nothing in himself. He is merely a boundless opportunity, but the responsibility for that opportunity is his and his alone.
One way of doing it if you can't find an authoritative version.
