It the original convent where the general mother superior lives and from where all the whole order\'s province is managed
Peer comment(s):

disagree Maria Chmelarova : cannot open! Is it net. org. com. gov. or ? I did not know, that dictionary is fine, now! Probably depends on who is using a dictionary.

just look at the www pagreI sugested
agree Dylan Edwards : Also just "mother house": "founding house of a religious order" (Oxford Dict.). There are also lots of Google hits for "motherhouse of the congregation". This is not my subject - this is the best information I have.

Neither I am, this is the best and most accurate infoermation I have

It appears that indeed \'mother convent\' in English can apply to both male and female congregations. However, the Czech \'mateřinec\', according to the \'Slovnik spisovneho jazyka ceskeho\' pertains to female congregations.

\'Mother house\' is widely used by the Catholics for both male and female congregations.

disagree Maria Chmelarova : In Ceske B. ? , sure they did, materinec. Maybe you got wrong website.

Check the 'Slovnik spisovneho jazyka ceskeho'. You'll find it there too. Did they call the thing in Ceske B. 'mateřinec'?
agree Radovan Pletka : about 300 hits, but not all relevant. Motherhouse convent seems to have more accurate hits

mercy convent, monastery ( today hospital )>>>

mercy - mean a disposition to show kindness or compassion - which supouse to be a primary obligation of those hospitals, take anybody, who needs a help... which is very far from the truth today....

Okrem modlitieb, vychovy novych clenov (noviciek) zacali nadobudat iny charakter.

Len osobny nazor, citanim textov.

disagree Sarka Rubkova : Disagree with this explanation; becuase I believe it is not correct

read all of it. I do not say it has to be, why not use neutral ?
disagree Radovan Pletka : explanations are nice, but the translation is definitely no go for US English, nobody would get the meaning you want to convey, which is usually your problem as non native speaker, relaying on dictionaries too much in stead of real knowledge and guts
6 hrs
Agree with the first part of your input. Relaying on dictionaries too much, where did you get that idea? Having a nightmares from dictionaries?
disagree Irena : you need to consider the use of the English word +reliable native Eng references

headquarters

See this quote from my ref.

Possibly \"mother church\" (see http://dict.die.net/mother church/), but I\'m not at all sure. Maybe some synonym of \"headquarters\", such as \"centre of operations\".

Reviewing these answers, and doing a bit more searching, I\'m sure the best option is simply \"mother house\".

disagree Maria Chmelarova : with headquarters, rest is for conversation, some option...
