Discussion

Christine Lam Mar 22, 2005:
I would not limit this dialogue to science only and keep it more general
Non-ProZ.com Mar 22, 2005:
Thanks for all the suggestions so far! What about "to promote the image of science in the public eye" - or is this off the mark?

disagree Claire Langhard : "advocate" doesn't appear, and I find is not warrented in this context

advocate means sich für etwas stark machen, you don´t need to be too literal all the time!
agree JeffFish (X) : nothing wrong with advocate

agree Richard Benham : Assuming we accept Claire's suggestion (from Langenscheidt) of "stand up for", this is a perfectly good alternative.//The "the" just has to go, of course....

make themselves strong/forceful/powerful for dialogue with the (general) public

translation of <sich stark machen für> as per Langenscheidts is <stand up for>...

agree JeffFish (X) : yeah baby

neutral Richard Benham : This doesn't seem to tie in with your definition from Langenscheidt!

they make a case for/speak up for public dialogue

Or speak up for dialogue with the public. As Richard said, definitely not "the" dialogue.
