Kayed ABU-Zeid Jan 28, 2010:

Therefore, such a proverb does not exist in the American or European mentality. The culture in the Arab society is completely different from the western society. This term can’t be translated into English without losing its meaning.

agree Saleh Dardeer : I do agree though, in past, I had another version of my own translation for the English proverb which was From now on, I'd stick to the new Arabic entry of slapping :D

Faithful are the wounds of a friend

This is a well know proverb in English because it is verse from the Bible. Here it is:
“Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful” (Proverbs 27:6)
It is explained by someone

The truth certainly hurts sometimes, but when you know that the person telling you the truth is doing so as a friend and it is to help you, then it is not so painful after all. You come to trust and have faith in a friend who cares enough about you to tell you the truth. Friends like that are truly the best ones that we can have because we know that they care about us in spite of our failings and weaknesses while also wanting to see us be our best.

Here is another:
We need to learn from this Proverb how to be faithful friends and how to accept the faithful friendship of others, even when it hurts.
