agree Naikei Wong : Yes, I came across this term in some art assignments. I think it refers to the technique/crafting process involved (piercing to make holes)

neutral Last Hermit : 'pierced carvings' mainly refers to those ornamented with PERFORATIONS,whereas 透雕 could be of openwork. They are different.
