Chinese term

工业高增长行业

Chinese to English Bus/Financial Economics Industrial economics
This is given as a key term in an article, and is in the title of the article: FDI与中国工业高增长行业的发展:1998—2006

I am quite confused, because both 工业 and 行业 are usually translated as 'industry'. Also, in the article tables 工业 is listed as a subcategory of 行业: for example, table heading is 行业, then under it are the subheadings:
工业
煤炭采选业
石油和天然气开采业
黑色金属矿采选业
有色金属矿采选业
非金属矿采选业
其他采矿业

Can anyone help me clarify this?

Maybe this can help/clarify: http://nboard.nciku.com/qna/question/10000000000000034897

"for example 汽车工业 is only about manufacturing cars.

while 汽车行业 is any work or business to do with cars."

The title you suggested sounds good to me!
Shirley Chen Aug 22, 2009:
Sorry, Jeff. I didn't see your translation for the title earlier. I think it sounds good.
Shirley Chen Aug 22, 2009:
“中国工业” can be translated as “China's industrial sectors” (just as Ratlike suggested) or “China's industry sectors.”

Please see the following two references:

“FDI 对中国工业部门…”
“…FDI…on China's Industrial Sectors”
http://www.ceps.com.tw/ec/ecjnlarticleView.aspx?atliid=12750...

“...Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on China's Industry Sectors”
http://www.cerdi.org/P_perso/PP_PUB.asp?IDUSER=jiehe

Please note that “部门” (as in the first reference) doesn't necessarily mean “government agencies.”
It can refer to “private sectors” such as telecommunications, oil, tourism, banking, mining,.. etc.

Although “industrial branches”can be found in several documents too, the term seems less used than “industry sectors” or “industrial sectors.”

Jeff Keller (X) (asker) Aug 21, 2009:
I'm still trying to work out the title, and I've found some more references. This government statistics website (http://www.stats.gov.cn:82/ndsj/information/nj97/L021A.END) uses the phrase 'industrial branches' for 行业. The China Statistical Yearbook online (http://www.stats.gov.cn:82/yearbook/indexC.htm) gives the three main categories of 农业、工业、建筑业.

For the title I am leaning towards "FDI and the Development of High-Growth Industrial Sectors in China: 1998-2006"
Erica Salvaneschi Aug 21, 2009:
Title! So is it ok to translate the title as: "FDI and the development of high-growth industries in China's industrial sector"?

Sector for 行业 or 产业 (please see the explanation below)

Please see the following examples for the use of "sector" when refering to "行业":

China - Consumption of Kerosene by Sector - Industry (million tons)
中國 - 煤油消費總量按行業分 - 工業 (百萬噸)
China - Consumption of Kerosene by Sector - Mining of Other Ores (million tons)
中國 - 煤油消費總量按行業分 - 其他採礦業 (百萬噸)
China - Consumption of Kerosene by Sector - Mining & Processing of Ferrous Metal Ores (million tons)
中國 - 煤油消費總量按行業分 - 黑色金屬礦採選業 (百萬噸)
http://140.111.1.22/moecc/rs/pkg/tedc/china/ceng/cengt21.htm

按行业分 Grouped by Sector
煤炭开采和洗选业 Mining and Washing of Coal
石油和天然气开采业 Extraction of Petroleum and Natural Gas
食品制造业 Manufacture of Foods
http://222.29.208.61/Yearbook/hebei/html/0813.htm

(These two references are both very similar to your context.)

"产业" can be translated as "sector" too.

"工业" in Chinese generaly refers to "industrial sector", or simply "industry"

"行业" can refer to "industry" or "business" in many cases.

So it's indeed a little confusing sometimes. But in your context, I think "sector" should work well for your table heading. And for the subheadings, it's okay to omit the translation for "业" except "工业" for which "industrial sector" or "industry" can be considered as the translation.

The above information is just for your reference.
