Discussion

Elizabeth Spacilova Sep 15, 2007:
Yeah, every country has their Kocourkovy & shadow of absurdity. (Sorry to reply so late, I was off dealing with the Wise Men of Brandys). I also think of Batman and NYC when I hear Gotham, but Gotham Village, if your readers are 'wise', works well.
Andarin (asker) Sep 14, 2007:
absurdistan again yeah, ta elizabeth, I am aware of the territorial aspect of the thing, however i do not feel that in the given context (neverending debates and silly fiddling, complaints and all, about the somewhat controversial project for the new national library) i much pressured to stick to the narrow meaning/definition of the term. this country is full of kocourkovs innit :) would you agree?
Andarin (asker) Sep 14, 2007:
Hezky den a vikend!

basket case

Absurdistan

Except for one problem : Kocourkov is usually just a local area / village / community, while Absurdistan is more or less a whole country, region or nation. But then Czech has Absurdistan also ...
Example sentence:

Absurdistan is a term sometimes used to satirically describe a country in which absurdity is the norm, especially in its public authorities and government.

Chelm

This is not something a regular English speaker would probably know but there are the stories about the "sages of Chelm" - Jewish stories which, as it turns out, likely have been the inspiration for the Kocourkov book given how similar they are. My sons heard the Chelm stories at a primary school in the US so they are not entirely unknown here but still I am not sure this should be used assuming every English speaker will understand.

See the story I linked; it sounds entirely like kocourkovsti (=sages of Chelm).
