Dutch term or phrase:comminicatietrap
... zorgen vides en communicatietrappen voor een eenvoudige communicatie tussen werknemers op verschillende verdiepingen, een transparante sfeer en verassende lichtinval en zichtlijnen.
Presumably large open stairs/steps/staircase wher people congregate. If anybody can suggest a term in English I'd appreciate it!
According to the agency, 'is deze nagekeken door een tweede taalkundige expert', but on closer inspection I see that the 'expert' used 'communication' one time and 'communications' the other... Obviously communication is an adjective, and communications a noun, but I think the NL tendency to compound nouns is usually best treated as an adjective + noun. Anyway, now it's ll in the hands of the Gods :-)
And I tried to say that Richard, in addition to you and Michael, is a native English speaker as well, in other words that he must be aware of this as well.
Do you happen to know where this company expert is from? I suspect he might be Dutch or German, maybe French, but not British or American. Probably not Canadian either;)
I think ‘communications stairs’ is wrong. This makes it sound like there’s a bunch of telephones and other communication equipment all over the staircase;)
Richard, what would be the difference between 'communications stairs' and 'communication stairs'. Does this "s" signify some significant difference to you?
Ik kan er helemaal naast zitten maar volgens mij zijn verbindingstrappen elementen die later zijn toegevoegd aan een bestaande situatie of niet als een volle trap kunnen worden aangezien. Een vlizotrap is bijvoorbeeld zoiets, maar ook het laatste stuk uitschuif trap/ladder bij de brandtrappen. Ook in (oude) gebouwen waar op een specifieke plek geen trap was maar in de nieuwe situatie dat wenselijk wordt geacht, wordt er een verbindingstrap geïnstalleerd. Hier gaat het om een nieuw ontwerp dus mogen we aannemen dat we met een VOLWAARDIGE trap te maken hebben.
1) Many stairs are no "verbindingstrappen". A "verbindingstrap" is a specific concept.
2) Please have a look at the images. No person in his right mind would call this a "communicatietrap" while "verbindingstrap" would immediately ring a bell.

writeaway's example looks like a simple ‘spiral staircase’ to me, although if you want to stress the communication/communicative aspect of it you could of course also call it something else
on another note, don't all staircases ‘communicate’ (communicatie) and ‘connect’ (verbinding) between two different levels/areas of a building or space? een beetje dubbelop volgens mij.
Hoe zou je nu 'communication stairs' naar het Nederlands vertalen?
Zou dat dan niet 'verbindingstrap' zijn? En is het niet zo dat zo'n verbindingstrap de communicatie over en weer tussen medewerkers vergemakkelijkt? En zou er met nog geen 10 hits voor 'communicatietrap' daar niet gewoon 'verbindingstrap' mee zijn bedoeld?
En als je deze 'communication stairs' bekijkt zouden die dan niet heel goed 'verbindingstrappen' kunnen worden genoemd?
En toont dit niet weer eens te meer aan dat 'letterlijke' vertalingen voor verwarring zorgen? Want zou dit niet een 'letterlijke' vertaling uit het Engels kunnen zijn?

you could call it INTERNAL COMMUNICATION STAIRS that would put more emphasis on the fact that it is intended for human communication as/at a meeting place rather than just getting from one place to another, and as apposed to monumental/utility stairs which serve the practical purposes of conveyance of tools, goods, or even human traffic at that too.
You don't want to know what kind of words architects may come up with. But in this case I immediately understood that these kind of stairs have an additional function, namely vertical communication, as has been translated into the design. K.I.S.S.
Not specifically Russian, I was referring more to the NY projects (with the baked beans). There one may aslo encounter "communal staircases". Or any residential building for that matter. In an office building, one would call it a "public staircase" perhaps?
but 'Communal staircase' sounds like a Soviet era / any Western ghetto building phenomenon, where it should reek of cabbage soup and /or baked beans. According to Writeaway's picture, I would call it an "open (common) communication (gate)ways/landings' or something.
