E.g. He is in the house. Please contrast with “He is in a house”.
I'm confused because (if I remember rightly) my book translates “in the house” as “në shtëpi”, but I don’t see any definite article there – that would surely be as “në shtëpinë”.

The Definite and the Indefinite article!!!

The Albanian language is a little bit complicated in this case. When you say: "go in the house," since you already know which house, you do not need to emphasize the word house and use the definite form "shtëpinë".

But if you say: "in the house of my friend," then you say: "në shtëpinë e mikut tim." In this case, as you see, we use the definite form.
