English term

yogurt

English to Arabic Other Cooking / Culinary dairy
Dear all,

Is there any possible Arabic translation for "yogurt" other than لبنة as the Mawrid says (coz it's not mention in the Arabic Arabic dictionary) ... and other than زبادي coz the Arabic dictionary says that it's an Egyptian-specific term... and finally other than حليب رائب which is "buttet milk" and not "yogurt"??

Sorry for the long post but it's always translated as لبنة and this is not mentioned in the Arabic dic.

Thanks a lot

Thanks

Time Difference! Yes indeed they both suggested, but:
Tamer Mekhimar at : 9 mins from posting the question
&
Mohamed Attalah at: 23 mins from posting the question !! :)
maiabulela (asker) Jul 24, 2010:
Yes, Mohammad Atallah suggested that too! :)
Thanks for confirming.
Nadia Ayoub Jul 23, 2010:
I also agree with Nesrin.
Ghada Samir Jul 22, 2010:
Great! Great suggestion, Nesrin!
Nesrin Jul 22, 2010:
If you don't have a particular target readership, I'd use لبن زبادي which I think both Egyptians and non-Egyptians would instantly understand as yoghurt. لبن or زبادي on their own may be potentially confusing to both Egyptian and non-Egyptian readers, respectively. والله أعلم.
maiabulela (asker) Jul 22, 2010:
Or I think حليب مخثر is the one. it's not weird, it's not لبن رائب it's not حليب it's not زبادي I'll go for it :)
Arabic & More Jul 22, 2010:
Yes, maiabulela, I would (in normal circumstances) stick to لبن for yoghurt and حليب for milk. But if you are translating for an exclusively Egyptian audience then I guess you might prefer local terms like زبادي. I can see where this might cause confusion since لبن means milk in some dialects.
Arabic & More Jul 22, 2010:
Yoghurt is not a foreign concept needing transliteration, so I wouldn't want to use يوغرت in translation. لبن means yoghurt and is listed in the dictionary I use (Oxford).
maiabulela (asker) Jul 22, 2010:
lol Ok. It seems that we can translate "yogurt" as لبن and "milk" as حليب
If an Egyptian read that, though, it will be so confusing and they'll accuse the translator of many bad things :D

Thanks for the link.
Said Abouharia Jul 22, 2010:
You don't have to rely on a dictionary. Languages are actives, and each day there is a new born word:). That's is why they call it "living language or modern language". If you are not pleased with what you found, you can just transliterate it as يوغرت. It is understood by everyone.

( Yogurt )
واللغات الأوروبية الأخرى كالفرنسية والإيطالية واليونانية وغيرها.

وهناك في المعاجم العربية بدائل أخرى مثل: الصَّرَب، والحازر

لبن

I would go with لبن which just means plain yoghurt.

لبنة usually refers to thickened yogurt, which is like a very soft cheese.

لبن زبادي is an excellent choice , not only it would be clear to diff. Arab dialects , but also it is used as well in Egypt
