can anybody help me out with this sentence?

The text is an excerpt of a background to the study about the evaluation of strategies for the treatment of HIV infection.

The context is as follows:
(...) However, some information obtained appears to indicate that patients might wait to commence their treatment with anti-HIV drugs until their risk of falling ill is greatest, i.e. until their CD4 cell count is less than 250, thereby avoiding taking such drugs for als long as their CD4 cell count is higher than this.
Übersetzung:
Nach einigen Informationen scheint es allerdings angezeigt zu sein, dass die Patienten mit der HIV-Medikation erst dann beginnen sollten, wenn die Gefahr der Erkrankung am höchsten ist, das heißt, wenn die Zahl der CD4-Zellen unter 250 liegt. Dadurch wird die Einnahme der Medikamente so lange hinausgezögert (avoiding), bis die Zahl der CD4-Zellen höher als ... sind.

Das macht keinen Sinn. Was bedeutet hier "this"?
