NEWTON
Born on 4 January 1643, Newton grew up in Lincolnshire. Neither of his
parents knew how to read and write – his father died shortly before the
boy was born. Aged twelve he was sent away to school in Grantham. He
bought a small notebook with a vellum cover with two and a half pence
his mother had given him. Inside, in microscopic writing, he penned
Isacus Newton hunc librum possidet – ‘he possesses this book’ and then his
first notes:
... Instruments of drawing.
Pens made of Raven quils
thick & smooth paper
& light coulored blew paper
fine parchment
a flat thin bras ruler
a paire of compasses
a wing
& sundry plummetts
& pestells to draw withall
He soon graduates to tables of the sun’s altitude through the year,
copies of MODEL CORRESPONDANCE and the invention of a code based on
sounds. He takes the book to Cambridge when he goes up to study there
in 1661. When space in the notebook runs out he buys another, 90 by
140 mm (3½ x 5½ inches), covered in leather; in this small book his revolutionary
ideas on optics and momentum first see light of day. Four of
his Cambridge notebooks survive.
