English term

angel's share

GBK English to Portuguese Science Food & Drink
Definition from Oxford:
n. (usually with the) the quantity of wine or distilled spirits lost to evaporation while ageing in wooden casks; the vapours resulting from this process.
Example sentences:
A couple who claim that the "angel's share" from a whisky bond has blighted their property have been given the go-ahead to take the case to court. (BBC News)
“Today’s rain is tomorrow’s whisky,” goes the cheery old drinker’s proverb. Such optimism is being sorely tested as scotch finds itself on the rocks of not just a no-deal Brexit but also the threat that its US trade could evaporate, like the angel’s share. (The Times)
We use infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy, and from the laser measurements, ethanol concentration in the ‘angel’s share’ is determined and used as an indicator on the potential maturation losses of the cask. (insider.co.uk)

Discussion

mkray (X) Oct 22, 2019:
A dose dos anjos I still don't meet the criteria, as I'm a beginning translator, but here is my suggestion. I liked the term, a dose dos anjos, followed by the explanation that it's alcohol lost to evaporation in the aging process in barrels. Thanks

Definition from Publico newspaper:
due to the porousness of the barrel, some of the liquor inside would disappear during the critical aging process. The result? A loss of about 2% of the total volume per year. Because the liquid would evaporate into the heavens, it was dubbed the “angel’s share.” Images of drunken angels notwithstanding, this unavoidable circumstance is both a blessing and a curse.
https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-styles/american-whiskey/w...
Example sentences:
Dá-se ainda um nível de evaporação mais elevado em condições mais quentes, que se designa por “parte dos anjos”. (Aromaster)
