- Permanent deformation is the largest and the most frequently occurring problem when dealing with asphalt intersections. Rutting in the asphalt concrete layers develops gradually as the number of load application increases, usually appearing as longitudinal depressions in the wheel paths accompanied by small upheavals to the sides (1). Rutting may or may not have been related to a structural problem. There are three general types of asphalt pavement rutting that can results from different mechanism: consolidation and surface wear rutting, instability rutting and structural rutting, (2, 3, 4). Figure 2.1 shows the three rutting distress types if the asphalt pavement.

- After the extensive laboratory testing program, an evaluation of numerous tests was performed to determine their ability to differentiate mixtures with acceptable and inacceptable performance and to predict rutting [1]
- As it could be seen, dynamic modulus (E*) is recognised as a test with significant potential to be SPT for two important distresses of asphalt mixtures - rutting and failure [1]
