The life sciences comprise all fields of science that involve the scientific study of living organisms, like plants, animals, and human beings. However, the study of behaviour of organisms, such as practised in ethology and psychology, is only included inasmuch as it involves a clearly biological aspect.
While biology and medicine remain centerpieces of the life sciences, technological advances in molecular biology and biotechnology have led to a burgeoning of specializations and new, often interdisciplinary, fields.

Treba razlikovati prirodne nauke ("natural sciences", a često i samo "science" - zavisno od konteksta, npr. kao naziv nastavnog predmeta), kao najširi pojam za "the sciences involved in the study of the physical world and its phenomena" (astronomija, biologija, nauka o Zemlji, fizika, fizička hemija, hemija itd) od "life science" - "any of the branches of natural science dealing with the structure and behavior of living organism".

Mislim da je i na osnovu ovih definicija (iz nespornih izvora) jasno koje su razlike između “life sciences” (nauka o živim sistemima, nauka o životu i sl) i “natural sciences” (prirodne nauke):

Oxford Dictionary - OALD:
- life sciences, noun[pl.] - the sciences concerned with studying humans, animals or plants
- natural science, noun[C, U] - a science concerned with studying the physical world. Chemistry, biology and physics are all natural sciences.

Merriam-Webster:
- life sciences : a branch of science (as biology, medicine, and sometimes anthropology or sociology) that deals with living organisms and life processes —usually used in plural
