Spanish translation: familias individuales

Hi,

Can someone help me double check this translation. It seems to me like I cannot translate directly as I think that the two terms contradict each other.

How can a family be individual?

Is it correct to say "familia individual" ? Can someone give a more proper translation.

As previous answerers have already said, without a context I would use this option, meaning that you are referring to "this" or "that" family, not to any other: for example, that you can know that certain family (with surname, or with certain characteristics, excluding others) inhabited a house found by an archaeologist or mentioned in a document, you could say that "se han encontrado referencias a las familias concretas que habitaron esta casa" (o que hicieron promovieron la construcción de xxx, etc.). However, as pointed by Marcelo, there's no contradiction in using "familias individuales" as it means exactly what he says (individual, in Spanish, refers to a certain thing/ group, not necessarily to a single thing).
