From a text from the 1920s about Mexican architecture:

En la cuesta de la calle principal de Guanajuato hay un palacio de piedra rosa, siempre cerrado. Su piso bajo consta sólo de un muro almohadillado y cinco claros de proporciones exquisitas y sin chambrana.

The definition of claros in architecture that I was able to find is:

Parte de un edificio o de una fachada que no tiene nada construido en su interior, o que no lleva trabes u otros apoyos.

It does NOT seem to be the same as the more general term "clearings".

In other architectural contexts, and especially when compared and contrasted with 'solids', this is the word I would use. If you look at the definition architecturally of 'solids and voids' you will find that it has precisely this meaning. But it tends to be used more in the context of modern architecture.

I am not so certain about using it here, hence the low confidence level. It has the right meaning, but might not be appropriate in this more historical context.

I am suggesting it really as it might help point you in the right direction.
