For toddlers and children who have not yet mastered the alphabet, the HOTV, Snellen E, or picture chart may be used. Position the child either 10 or 20 feet away, matching the guidelines on the chart. Young children may have improved testing when the 10-foot eye chart is used (Hered, 2011).
