sagging earth long after burial

A burial depression is a slight cave-in of the earth, often because the coffin has decomposed to the point of collapse. Therefore, a double depression would be a double dip in the ground.

Fair point. Not necessarily long. I just wanted to differentiate this from the hole that is dug to bury the person in the first place (i.e. the grave)

agree juvera : Try it with sand or flour and long, narrow object. An object not very deep down will show its' contour: depressions on both sides of the coffin or body, while if it is deep down, the soil will sink in the middle, so only one impression will be formed.

answer below

In some ancient cultures, husband and wife were buried together. So it may be a case of a double burial leading to two depressions at shallow depths, but forming one at greater depths.
