ultimate in this case means: if the price of gold changes drastically, something major is happening.

It means that gold is a very secure commodity, and if something happens to the value of the gold, it could have serious repurcussions across the GLOBE. In other words, as long as the price of gold is stable, the fat cats can relax.

Yes, I understand, why gold is considered "burglar alarm" (the gold standard is more transparent for the public/investors, than other exchange standards that can be manipulated by governments), but my question was, what "ultimate" exactly refers to? Do you think, it is about WORLD-WIDE ramifications? Can you find some synonym adjectives?
