Yes: if you have been or presently are an alcoholic or a drug addict

HI Denny,

Put a bit more bluntly than in your text, the person volunteering for the sudy can't be either an alcoholic or a drug addict. People with substance abuse problems who participate in studies usually present compliance problems.

HTH,

Elena

:::::::: Just to clarify: in Medicine, \"history\" refers to anything in the past up to the present time.

agree DGK T-I : current or past 'history', in the medical sense

Yes. ("History" is in the original text, which Denny wanted explained, that's why I preferred to steer away from the usual medical phrasing). Thanks :-)

persons who have abused alcohol or drugs will not be accepted

they are not referring to the present, they are referring to the past (History of)

this does not mean that they cannot drink or use drugs; abuse is different than casual use
Peer comment(s):

agree Özden Arıkan : you're right, it doesn't refer to the present situation only: those who had been addicts in the past won't be eligible either

agree Elena Sgarbo (X) : Hi Rita. I agree with your answer. Re: your explanation, however, in Medicine we say "history of..." to refer to both past and present conditions / events in general. To place references in "the past", we write in the pt's chart: "PAST medical history"

Hi and thanks Elena, I do not work in the medical field but I know a distinction is made between user/abuser/addict
