English term

value

Non-PRO English Social Sciences Philosophy synonym
What I'm looking for is a word that conveys the same general sense as the word 'value', but without the implied connection to quantitative ways of thinking and money.

In ethics, when people discuss 'value', the meaning is often very broad.

'He values his family very highly' - 'Security was a greater value than freedom' - 'A person must decide moral actions based on their values'

So what I'm looking for really is synonym for 'value' that has no monetary or quantitative associations, and basically means 'something you care about'.

Thanks.

But those aren't wrong. "I value her friendship" doesn't mean "every evening I calculate the worth of her friendship in dollars and record it on an Excel spreadsheet." The meaning is obvious from the context.
Helena Chavarria Oct 21, 2016:
I value her friendship.

I value my privacy.

I value your opinion, etc.

Yes A sentence containing the word "value" where you think it's wrong.

Some context would help clarify your question.
philgoddard Oct 21, 2016:
I think you're misunderstanding the meaning of the word, so your question is not valid. It doesn't necessarily have quantitative connotations. The value of my house is not the same as my philosophical values.

Plural "values"? Acquinas, Hume, Kant, Rawls, Scanlon ...

Verb? Do you want the verb or the noun?

Note from asker:
Thanks, I had considered worth, but it's uncountable and I need a countable noun.

importance (noun)

You can use "importance" as below:
"He places great importance on his family."
"Security was of greater importance than freedom."
"A person must decide moral actions based on what he considers important."
Note from asker:
Thanks, but your own explanation demonstrates the awkwardness of trying to noun-ify it. I need something a bit easier to use. Also, importance carries the association with trade in its etymology at least.

cherish (verb) / merit or worthiness

Declined
He cherishes his family very highly.
Security was a greater merit than freedom.
A person must decide moral actions based on their worthiness.

If you would like to use the same word for each sentence, you can use a word with a broader meaning like significance or importance.
