Discussion

Non-ProZ.com May 15, 2005:
the name does not relate to a discoverer, for this insect. i thought the word could relate as well to heliconian plants, somehow because of spiral shape or for being waxy. not sure though!
David Moore (X) May 15, 2005:
AFAIK, ALL butterflies and moths have a coiled proboscis - certainly every one which I have ever seen - so no point in going further along THAT road...
Balasubramaniam L. May 15, 2005:
OK, we seem to be zeroing in! Does this particular butterfly have a longer or more prominent curled tongue to justify the name Heliconian? Another line of investigation is: Was this butterfly discovered by someone called Helix or Helicon or Heliconian?
Non-ProZ.com May 15, 2005:
In fact it does have a coiled tongue! The sentence goes as "the Postman butterfly belongs to a group of butterflies called the Heliconians".
Facts here are that it has long uneven wings (turtuous), very pretty (legendary nymph), a coiled tongue (helicon shape).
But then the text says "Moths have a similar coiled tongue to butterflies".
This implies that all butterflies and moths have coiled tongues and not only the heliconians. So this what kept me investigating!
Balasubramaniam L. May 15, 2005:
Heliconian could mean coiled like a helix, like a watch-spring. Does this butterfly have a particularly long, coiled or prominent proboscis?
Non-ProZ.com May 14, 2005:
according to Mike's last addendum, could it be Nymph Butterflies (that is legendary beautiful, not as in pre-maturing nymph insect)?
Non-ProZ.com May 14, 2005:
some have also given it the name 'Zebra' because of the colourful stripes. but as native English speakers, what does the word heliconian imply to you?
striped; spiral or truly pretty?
Non-ProZ.com May 14, 2005:
that's rigt! it does have long & narrow wings. also hindwings rounded and shorter than forewings, which might relate to the "tortuous" word Lamrini suggested, and somehow has to do with the musical instrument, helicon. I need to translate this name into Arabic but had to investigate it in English first. guess we're getting somewhere now. Many thanks to all.
Michael Powers (PhD) May 14, 2005:
I have now noticed that Heliconian butterflies seem to have a noticeable array of colors, and as one source states, a beautiful name for beautiful butterflies. Apparently it is due to their beauty they were named Heliconian.
Michael Powers (PhD) May 14, 2005:
I am wondering if "Heliconian" does not mean "long winged" and is somehow connected through Greek mythology. I notice that many sites stqate long-winded (Heliconian) butterflies. I am trying to research this.
Non-ProZ.com May 14, 2005:
Dear Mike, I found those definitions earlier but still they do not explain the word 'heliconian'. Some suggest a 'helicon' greek origin of the word, but heliconian butterflies are native American! any idea on the word heliconius? Thnk you.

helicon

It is a Greek root word. Most taxonomic names have Latin or Greek roots.

"1529, from Gk. Helikon, mountain in Boeotia, sacred to the Muses, in which arose the fountains of Aganippe and Hippocrene. Lit. "the tortuous mountain," from helix (gen. helikos) "spiral"

adjectival form of helix, that is coiled spirally like a watch spring

Another possibility is that "heliconian" is the adjectival form of "helix", that is spirally coiled, like a watch spring.

Now, the only part of a butterfly's body that has that shape is its proboscis. Does this butterfly have a particularly long, coiled or prominent proboscis?

In fact, this was the first meaning that came to my mind, probably because I don't know much of Greek mythology.

Another possibility is that this butterfly is named after the person who discovered this butterfly and he had a name like Helix or Helicon. There are many scientific names that carry the discoverer's name. If that is so, it would occur as the species part of the name.
