German to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Software Funktionalität vs. Funktionsweise
Hi,

I'm translating an End-User License Agreement, and in the "Definitions" part, the terms "Funktionalität" and "Funktionsweise" appear a lot in the same sentence. Although the difference between them is obvious in German, their translation to EN can get a bit tricky. I am sure there must be "THE" appropriate term for this in English, but since I'm not a tech expert, I could use some insights here;) Have a look at the context:

Any input would be greatly appreciated :)

Here's my attempt. Hope it's useful. Bug fixing is when faults in the existing program are repaired. It doesn’t change or build upon on the way it works or the extent of what it does.

Updates are minor upgrades to an existing program, and/or they replace one of its features with something better. But they basically retain the scope of its existing features, or achieve what it already does in a different way.

....highbrow term for component/device/program.....

Duh...?
Deborah Lüdi Reidy (asker) Jan 23, 2020:
Hi @Stefen and @Ramey, thanks for your input. I also think that it's referring to the program (features).
Steffen Walter Jan 23, 2020:
I suspect that ... ... "Funktionalität" stands for "(range/scope of) program/software features (included/supplied/provided)" in this case. "Funktionsweise" should then be equivalent to "mode of operation" or similar.
Ramey Rieger (X) Jan 23, 2020:
gelieferten Funktionalität seems to me to be a rather (unnecessarily) highbrow term for component/device/program. Maybe I'm wrong, but for example:
"Bug fixing" refers to repairs made to the component/device/program delivered/purchased without changing or expanding its functions or their scope.

License agreements don't necessarily HAVE to be incomprehensible, do they?

would be my suggestion - Funktionalität should always be funtionality

Actually I would suggest "functional principle" for Funktionsweise

Thanks, Barbara! That helps a lot:)

functionality vs behavioral mode/behavior

'Bugfixes' correct errors in the functionality delivered without altering or expanding the behavioral mode and/or scope of the functionality at hand.

It seems to me that German speakers talk about Funktionsweisen where English speakers would talk about the expected behaviors of a functionality.

scope of functions

I would say that the Funktionalität in this case means the scope of functions that come with the software.

neutral D. I. Verrelli : True, although the phrase doesn't really roll off the tongue.
