have cheated me in matters of the heart/love
i.e., he's been cheated in business by men, and in love by women - all I can say is, choices ;-)

have really conned/cheated/swindled me in personal relationships
"With men you have business relationships, and you can be ripped off, but in a different way. With women I've been really conned/cheated/swindled in terms in personal relationships."
The emphasis here seems to be on the difference between business and personal relationships. I would underline "personal" in the translation.
"Matters of the heart" just doesn't work here.

Typo (sorry): That should read "... in terms OF personal relationships" (2nd line of the explanation).

: As I understand it, the common denominator is 'beschissen/gelinkt' which is then applied to the two different relationships.

I purposely avoided the use of "ride" in this context since it could be misconstrued (and kids might be reading this) :-)

: while i think you are on the right track, your examples refer to "emotional cheating" (telling someone else you have feelings for them) as opposed to physically sleeping with them (both refer to personal relationships rather than business)
