German term

dazugesellen

What does "dazugesellen" mean in this context? Thanks in advance!

Thanks x a million!
agree BrigitteHilgner : "intensified/worsened/heightened" are my favourites. I don't think "joined" works in this case.

I think joined is okay, but misses the emotional potency. thanks Brigitte, hope you're well!

Thank you PhoebeRuth, your name always reminds me of Phoebe Snow.
agree Horst Huber (X) : "Compounded" is the one version that does not read (quite understandable) emotions into the text

Compounded, compacted, made denser - it was my first idea - but I see what you mean. You're not a native speaker, are you? The term is one of those subtly colored words. Thanks Horst, hold on to your umbrella!

Thank you kindly, Palilula!
agree Lancashireman : ...with Horst. Your best option is your first: 'compounded by'.

is heaped on top of it

We need a vivid verbal phrase here..

"...especially if uncertainty is heaped on top of it."

Compare with this:

"When secrecy is felt to be a necessity, guilt is compounded, and shame is heaped on top of it."
